A celebration of late 18th to early 20th century Black British composers. Decus Ensemble is a diverse group of professional classical musicians who collaborate to promote the works of lesser-known composers throughout musical history. As part of the project plainsightSOUND (curated by artistic director Uchenna Ngwe), they explore the music and histories of Black Caribbean and African classical composers with links to Britain.
Monday 24 June 2024 20:00 – 21:00 Pigott Theatre
This is an in-person only event in the British Library Pigott Theatre.
Join Decus Ensemble and Le Gateau Chocolate for a whistlestop exploration of historical Black classical composers in Britain up to the first half of the 20th century. Journey through time with them as they present music inspired by folk traditions, ballrooms and the classical concert hall alongside a selection of prose and poetry to paint a picture of changing Black perspectives. Featured composers include Ignatius Sancho, Frederick Bridgetower, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Amanda Aldridge (aka Montague Ring).
Le Gateau Chocolat’s work spans drag, cabaret, opera, musical theatre, children’s theatre and live art. A celebrated baritone, Le Gateau Chocolat has performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Centre, Sydney Opera House, and as part of the Olivier- winning La Clique/La Soiree.
